TAD Foundation Institutional Building

Mass timber for a new generation of mid-rise institutional buildings.

Technical Sheet TELETÓN O’HIGGINS INSTITUTE GYMNASIUM:

  • Year: 2025
  • Architects: Elton-Leniz, Cruz-Mandiola and Rodrigo Fernández.
  • Location: Providencia, Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile.
  • Built Area: 1.378,5 m²
  • Structural System: CLT and Glulam
  • Timber Volume: CLT 207 m³ / GLT 142 m³

The TAD Foundation Institutional Building is part of the new campus of Talleres de Adaptación y Desarrollo (TAD), an organization dedicated to the social and labor inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.

The project incorporates a mass timber structure composed of laminated timber columns and beams (Glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor slabs. With three levels and a rooftop terrace, the building reaches nearly 1,400 m² of constructed area and stands among the first mid-rise institutional buildings in Chile developed using CLT.

Structure and Design

The building combines a concrete base with two upper levels constructed in mass timber. Above this base, Glulam columns and beams support exposed CLT slabs, enabling an efficient structural system while creating warm interior spaces.

The project integrates into the urban context of Providencia and connects with an existing historic house on the site, forming a campus that accommodates workshops, educational spaces and gathering areas for the community.

Assembly Process

The structural components were prefabricated and CNC-machined, optimizing the precision of the connections and accelerating the construction process.

The prefabrication of the mass timber components reduced construction times, minimized waste and facilitated on-site assembly.

Niuform participated in the project by providing design support, engineering, machining, fabrication and structural assembly.

Innovation and Sustainability Commitment

The mass timber structure stores approximately 265 tons of CO₂, helping reduce the building’s carbon footprint.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project also promotes social integration by creating spaces open to the community and dedicated to the development of educational and professional activities led by the TAD Foundation.

Claro Arena

Claro Arena, located in Las Condes, Santiago, is an icon of contemporary infrastructure in Chile, both for the incorporation of exposed massive wood in its structural system, and for its conception as a multipurpose venue.

Teletón O’Higgins Institute Gymnasium

The Teletón O’Higgins Institute Gymnasium is a facility designed to support rehabilitation processes and physical activity, incorporating a mass timber structure that combines construction efficiency, industrial precision, and high spatial quality for its users.

Puertecillo House

This project in Puertecillo bay excellently shows the meeting of mass timber with nature in an exceptional and inspiring environment.

Cruz House

Cruz House is a project that clearly shows the many benefits of using Mass Timber and CLT. Thanks to the technology of these materials, this house was built in just two days, highlighting two essential qualities of Niuform CLT: speed and - more importantly - quality.

"Muñequitos" and "Pin Pin Serafín" Kindergartens

Thermal comfort and earthquake-resistant construction: two great qualities featured in the new "Muñequitos" and "Pin Pin Serafín" kindergartens built with CLT. This initiative, promoted by CORFO in conjunction with JUNJI, positions these kindergartens as the first to be built with this material.

CMPC BUILDING, LOS ÁNGELES

The CMPC building in Los Ángeles was primarily built with CLT and GLT-based solutions and features FSC® and LEED® certification, making it a landmark in sustainable architecture.

Santa Olga Footbridge

This project began as a CMPC initiative to rebuild an area that wildfires had consumed entirely. Today the Santa Olga footbridge shows off the best of this beautiful locale thanks to wooden architecture that combines perfectly with the surrounding nature.

MSPORTHORSES Stables

These stables, designed to hold 14 jumping horses, were mainly built with laminated timber and glulam; materials that gave shape to this beautiful structure, despite its complex geometry.
